Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu combines traditional Asian healing with Western medicine. Shiatsu means "finger pressure" in Japanese and is originally a Japanese form of therapy. Like acupuncture, it is based on the meridian system (energy pathways) and the teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In Europe and the USA, Shiatsu has been combined with Western medicine and health science and has thus established itself as an effective method of complementary therapy.

For which complaints is Shiatsu used?

Shiatsu helps with physical complaints such as back, neck and joint pain, with headaches and migraines, with gastrointestinal problems, menstrual and menopausal complaints and with physical pain without a clear medical cause.

Shiatsu is also helpful for mental and emotional stress such as insomnia, nervousness, stress, exhaustion and burn-out, eating disorders, anxiety and depression.

In stressful life situations such as life crises, separation, grief and bullying, Shiatsu can offer good support.

Shiatsu can be used as a stand-alone therapy, and is also useful as an accompaniment to conventional medical treatments or psychotherapy.

What is the effect of Shiatsu?

Shiatsu has a relaxing and invigorating effect at the same time: neck and foot massages and joint mobilisations release tension. By stretching and working the meridians, energetic blockages are released - the energy flows again. Shiatsu promotes health in people of all ages and strengthens the natural self-healing powers.

The deep, empathic and attentive touch is central to Shiatsu. It helps to improve breathing and calms the autonomic nervous system. Shiatsu gives a clearer perception of the body and a feeling of wholeness. Because shiatsu touches people as a whole and addresses them on a physical, emotional and cognitive level, it is also well suited for gaining clarity in processes of change and insights into oneself.
